When choosing the right garage door opener, determine what size you need. Measure the height of the door because the opener needs to open the entire door height. For instance, if you have a seven-foot high door, choose a seven-foot opener. Determine the width as well because this will make a difference in the size of the motor required. If you have a ten-foot wide door, for example, choose a motor with one-third horse power. If the garage door is over ten feet wide, use an opener with one-half horsepower.

Another thing to consider is choosing between screw-driven or chain-driven openers. The former is less noisy, while the other uses a chain that rattles, which makes it noisier. The chain-driven opener is less expensive, though. One more point to remember is a wall button. This button is usually located on the wall inside the garage. They are available in simple forms - like a doorbell button. They can also be elaborate enough to let you lock the motor for security reasons. When installing the door opener, you can either do it yourself or hire an expert to do it for you.
